HDSL, or High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line, is a technology that provides high-speed digital data transmission over copper telephone lines. It was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s as an alternative to T1 lines, which were costly and limited in availability.

HDSL operates by using a technique called symmetrical digital subscriber line (SDSL). This means that it can transmit data at the same high speed in both the downstream and upstream directions. This is different from other DSL technologies like asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL), which provides faster downstream speeds but slower upstream speeds.

One of the main advantages of HDSL is its ability to transmit data at higher speeds and over longer distances compared to other DSL technologies. It offers transmission rates of up to 2.048 Mbps over a distance of up to 3.5 miles, making it suitable for business and residential use.
